Monumental Beauty on Display at Brooklyn Museum

Brooklyn Museum is currently hosting Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui, a solo exhibit featuring over 30 pieces by Ghanian artist, El Anatsui. Using found materials, he transforms his constructions into site-specific sculptures. As the name suggests, the result is monumental.

Anatsui’s work represents a new African medium that sits somewhere between sculpture and abstract art. He uses items such as bottle caps and aluminum wrappers to create radically transformed installations that display none of the original items’ banality. The final constructions resemble traditional African textiles and crafts, and combine aesthetic traditions from Africa and from the global abstraction movement.

In person, the immensity, elegance and symmetry, of the installations is awe-inspiring. When I visited the exhibit, I snapped a few photos to share with you all; I’m not sure they do the work justice, but I hope you enjoy them nonetheless.

The exhibit runs at Brooklyn Museum until August 4, 2013.
