Head-to-Toe Leather Never Looked So Good
Australian label, KAHLO, combined leather, mesh and denim to create its recent androgynous, and richly textured, collection. Generally, I find head-to-toe leather unbearable, but in this case the designing duo and close friends, Rachelle Sinclair and Fay Ogunbadejo, produced pieces that are both sexy and sophisticated — which can be a difficult mix to pull off.
The inspiration for this SS13/14 collection is the evocative work of American photographer, Francesca Woodman. Her ghostly, black and white portraits combine a moving subject with long camera exposure to create images of women that seem to disappear before your eyes.
The collection was presented at The Box during Sydney’s recent Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, and the environment was dark and minimalist. With the shots I took that day, I wanted to capture the way a photographer’s eye sees the model moving through the viewfinder. Snapshots appear half-seen before the eye’s focus moves on and looks for the next image. Colors are mixed or erased entirely, some details are remembered and others disappear.
